Performer at Cal Poly causes website crash and creates panic among students.
Rap artist, Swae Lee, is scheduled to perform at Cal Poly on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
Swae Lee is most famously known to be apart of Rae Sremmurd, a Southern hip-hop duo known for their diverse music and distinct style.
Outside of Rae Sremmurd, Swae has established himself with tracks such as the 20x Platinum "Sunflower" with Post Malone and the Diamond Certified "Unforgettable" with French Montana. He has also showcased his notable writing credits on hits like Beyoncé's "Formation" and Travis Scott's Diamond Certified "Sicko Mode."
This announcement from Cal Poly ASI Events has created a buzz around the campus as many students are excited to see the artist perform.
The tickets for the event, free to Cal Poly students, were released on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 12 p.m. There were around 2,500 tickets were available at the beginning of the sale.
Students flooded the site exactly at noon, causing the site to crash immediately.
“I was so panicked. I was so excited about the concert, especially because it’s free, but when the site failed. I was scared tickets were going to sell out before I could get one”, says first year Ella Baley.
Throughout the day, students kept checking to see if the website would reload.
“I ended up checking the website every 30 minutes. It’s not everyday that you can see a mainstream rapper for free”, says current Cal Poly student, Ayesha Kaushal.
Fortunately, the website restarted a couple hours later and students were able to buy their tickets.
Through all the excitement, there were many students that weren’t interested in going to the concert. Most students were confused about why Sway Lee coming to perform at Cal Poly.
“It’s so random that he’s coming here to perform. He’s cool and all, but I feel like Cal Poly students listen to mostly house, indie, or country music”, says student Mikeylah Galang.
It came as a surprise that a rapper would come to San Luis Obispo to perform, since rap isn’t the most popular genre at the school. Most recently, the school hosted singer, Dayglow, in a free concert for students which featured indie music.
To incentivize more students to come, Cal Poly ASI Events chose a house music DJ, I.P. What’s the Addy, to open for Swae Lee.
Other students shared their concerns about when the concert was scheduled.
Another Cal Poly student, Kyra Donovan, says, “I’m not sure if I’m going to go. It’s literally week nine on a Wednesday night. I need to be studying that week!”
The concert being scheduled towards the end of the quarter stopped a lot of students from buying tickets, as finals and exams approach.
Although many students decided not to go to the concert, the event is currently sold out.
Swae Lee will be performing at the Cal Poly Recreation Center on Wednesday, May 29 at 8 p.m with opener, DJ I.P. What’s the Addy.
