As midterms ramp up at Cal Poly, students are heading to local cafés in San Luis Obispo in search of study space. Many are finding it harder than expected to focus.

Popular spots like SLO Do Co and Scout Coffee, once known for their relaxed atmosphere, are now crowded with students competing for tables and outlets. The increase in noise and foot traffic has made it more difficult for some to concentrate.

Cal Poly student Ryan Jocson said the environment can be distracting, especially during peak hours. He said he still chooses to study in cafés because the routine and presence of other students help him stay motivated.

Peer mentor Heather Burgraff said study environments play an important role in academic performance. While some students can work in busy settings, she said many struggle to focus in noisy spaces. Burgraff recommends arriving early, reserving study spaces or finding quieter alternatives when possible.

Despite the challenges, cafés remain a central part of student life in San Luis Obispo. As midterms continue, students are adjusting their study habits to find what works best.
